Il est fait roi de Bohême en 1646 puis de Hongrie en 1647, élu roi des Romains (c’est-à-dire futur empereur du Saint-Empire romain germanique) le 31 mai 1653 et couronné roi des Romains à Ratisbonne le 18 juin de la même année. Il meurt célibataire en 1654 à l'âge de 20 ans et avant son père, laissant la succession au trône à son frère cadet, le futur Léopold Ier.
