note
| - Xenotransfusion, transfusion of blood from one species to another, has been the first transfusion practice used in the past in Human Medicine. This method has been abandoned toward allotransfusion. Because of the shortage of human organs for transplantation, the eventuality to use an animal source is again considered. Facing this renewal for xenotransplantation, xenotransfusion has been reconsidered. For both xenotransplantation and xenotransfusion, pig has been elicited as best donor species. This work reviews the history of xenotransfusion and focuses on the actual development. It shows that ethical and technical hurdles are less marked for xenotransfusion than for xenotransplantation.
