note
| - Metal prostheses, coated or uncoated with biomaterials, are often used in orthopaedic surgery. Titanium and its alloys are used in implantology thanks to their good mechanical properties and, in additional, they are biocompatible. Hydroxyapatite (HAp) has very good biological properties, in particular, ostéoconduction. When Ti-6Al-4V is coated with HAp, it presents a good compromise between the mechanical and biological properties. Bone is a specialized conjunctive fibre in which are associated a mineral phase in the form of crystals of HAp and an organic matrix constituted by collagen. The c-axes of HAp and the collagen fibres are preferentially oriented in the direction of the stresses that the bones need to withstand. At the implant-bone interface, the new bone reconstituted after implantation changes its properties in order to accept the implant. We studied the mechanical properties of the HAp crystals used in two types of applications of HAp: replacement and implantology. We made measurements by neutron diffraction and synchrotron radiation with a spatial resolution on samples of tibia bone after implantation in several animals. We followed the evolution of reorganization of the crystals of HAp in the bone reconstituted by controlling three parameters: Time of implantation, site of implantation and weight of the animal. The results obtained show clearly that the crystals of HAp in the bone reconstituted at the interface with the face of the implant coated with HAp preserve the preferential orientation of a bone and confirm the major interest of the use of HAp in implantology.
