note
| - The first part of the thesis tries to find answers to the question : \"are exchange rate excessively variable?\" the first chapter confirms that exchange rate volatility burst during the transition to a flexible exchange rate system. But there is no evidence of a continued rise in volatility since 1973. The second chapter evaluates if exchange rate volatility is excessive in the sense of harmful to international trade. According to our empirical tests exchange rate volatility has a zero or even a positive impact on trade. Thus, exchange rates instability is difficult to characterise without reference to equilibrium levels. The second part of the thesis interprets exchange rates instability as their unpredictability. The third and fourth chapters show that the mediocrity of monetary and portofolio models predictions has a potential common factor in the central role of expectations. The third part seeks the origin pf exchange rate instability in the influence of expectations. The fifth chapter studies the probability of explosive bubbles. The sixth chapter demonstrates how feedback effects exclude \"a priori\" the existence of such bubbles. The seventh chapter explores the explanations of exchange rates instability offered by the \"sunspots theory\", mimetism, expectations heterogeneity.
