| - A partir des résultats d'une enquête de terrain de 16 mois réalisée en 1983-84, et de nombreux documents bibliographiques et iconographiques, l'auteur propose la description et l'interprétation d'objets et de cérémonies disparus depuis plusieurs décennies d'une île de Papouasie - Nouvelle Guinée: les Malanggan de Nouvelle Irlande. L'ouvrage s'attache successivement aux modalités de l'utilisation rituelle de l'effigie dans la perspective funéraire et aux droits complexes régissant la fabrication des objets dont les modèles étaient soumis à un système de copyright. Il présente les cérémonies comme le lieu d'une interrogation sur les formes de présence, matérielle et spirituelle, ainsi que sur les rapports symboliques entre les sexes, et montre comment les modèles des objets étaient régis par un système juridique, identique à celui des biens fonciers, témoignant d'un ajustement entre la filiation matrilinéaire et l'idéologie masculine de la société
- From ethnographical data collected during a sixteen months fieldwork done in 1983-84 and a large collection of bibliographical and iconographical records, the author propounds a description and interpretation of effigies and rituals which have passed away since several decades from a Papuan New Guinean island: the Malanggan of New Ireland. The thesis is centred on the ritual use of the effigy in the funerary context and the rights governing the manufacture of objects whose patterns where subjected to a copyright. It interprets the ceremonies as a place of interrogation about the human and supernatural presences, and about the symbolic relationships between sexes. It shows how the objects patterns were submitted to a juridical system similar to the land tenure's one, revealing an adjustment between the matrilineal filiation and masculine ideology of the society
