| - This work, based on a study of “Les relations de temps dans le verbe français” by Benveniste, also attempts to assess the numerous articles that followed in its wake. Although it appears necessary to examine more thoroughly and precisely the contexts in which the French passé simple may be used, and despite the need to redefine Benveniste’s “histoire” itself as simply deprived of deictic time adverbials, Benveniste alone provides us with a key to understanding how, through the evolution of the French language, the passé simple has become a specialized tense whose use is restricted to these very contexts. We then proceed to study the passé simple in the particular context of “histoire”: we examine separately the time adverbials, the temporal value of the tenses, to later study their co-occurrence in the clause, and the verbal aspect, defined ultimately as the relation in the verbal form between the verbal event and the moment expressed, in order to describe the narrative concatenation, from one clause to the next — especially the evolution of the narrative through successive clauses using the same tense. Finally, this lengthy study allows us to assess the specific value of “histoire” in the passé simple, its operating process as a closed context with tightened temporal order relations, and it highlights its fundamentally artificial character, that is being shown and claimed as such; the linguistic evolution of the passé simple extends into a stylistic one, through the specialization of distinct narrative genres, whether formal or private (letters, diaries), before the literary criticisms of a conformist narrative form.
- Nous sommes partie à notre tour — après tant d’autres, dont nous tâchons aussi de rendre compte — des « Relations de temps dans le verbe français » de Benveniste : s’il faut décrire avec plus d’exhaustivité et de précision qu’il ne le fait les contextes où le passé simple peut s’employer, s’il faut redéfinir notamment l’« histoire » comme un milieu simplement privé d’adverbes temporels déictiques, seul l’article de Benveniste permet de comprendre le processus de spécialisation du passé simple à ces seuls contextes qui s’est opéré dans l’évolution du français. Nous avons alors cherché comment se comporte le passé simple dans le contexte privilégié de l’« histoire » : nous sommes passée par l’étude séparée de l’adverbe temporel, du temps verbal, puis par l’examen de leur corrélation dans la proposition, et de l’aspect verbal, défini en fin de compte comme la relation, dans la forme verbale, entre l’événement et le moment exprimé, pour pouvoir décrire la chaîne narrative, d’une proposition à la suivante — spécialement, la progression narrative par propositions successives employant un même tiroir verbal. Ce long détour permet enfin de montrer la spécificité de l’« histoire » au passé simple, son fonctionnement de milieu clos aux relations d’ordre renforcées, et d’en débusquer le caractère fondamentalement fictif, qu’elle affiche et revendique comme tel : l’évolution linguistique du passé simple se prolonge en évolution stylistique, par spécialisation de genres narratifs distincts, officiels ou intimes, avant les dénonciations littéraires d’un conformisme du récit.
