| - This study aims at showing that most of the differences in the French translations of a vast corpus of Dino Buzzati’s works, far from being fortuitous, are connected to the puzzling and wrongly simple nature of the Buzzatian style. The meticulous analysis of the French translations, accompanied by new propositions of translations, allows to bring to light aspects of the style of the Italian author sometimes little or not studied by the criticism. By the same token, it highlights all the subtlety and the wealth of a writing considered for such a long time as neutral and totally without effects. The study underlines, on the one hand, Buzzati’s ability to weave subtle semantic networks by the scrupulous choice of terms with suggestive connotations and by varied use of repetitions. It updates, on the other hand, the mechanisms of writing which allow him to develop the lexical fields of the sound, dominated by effects of indefinite and mystery, and by the feelings of fear and anguish which are essential in his work. The study of the translations shows the sharpness with which Buzzati uses variations of register in the portrayal of characters and in the descriptions of atmospheres. Finally, it confirms the necessity to consider the poetics of a writer before any attempt of translation and shows how the analysis of translation can constitute a means of access to the literary text
- Cette étude vise à montrer que la plupart des écarts repérés dans les traductions françaises d’un vaste corpus d’oeuvres de Dino Buzzati, loin d’être fortuits, sont liés au caractère déroutant, parce que faussement simple, du style buzzatien. L’analyse minutieuse des traductions françaises, accompagnée de nouvelles propositions de traductions, permet de mettre en lumière des aspects du style de l’auteur italien parfois peu ou pas étudiés par la critique et de faire ressortir ainsi toute la subtilité et la richesse d’une écriture trop longtemps considérée comme neutre et dénuée d’effets. L’étude souligne, d’une part, l’habileté de Buzzati à tisser des réseaux sémantiques subtils par le choix scrupuleux de termes aux connotations suggestives et par l’utilisation variée de répétitions. Elle met à jour, d’autre part, les mécanismes d’écriture qui lui permettent de développer les champs lexicaux du son, dominé par des effets d’indéfini et de mystère, et celui des sentiments de peur et d’angoisse, fondamentaux dans son oeuvre. L’étude des traductions permet enfin de montrer la finesse avec laquelle Buzzati peut utiliser les variations de niveau de langue dans la caractérisation des personnages et des atmosphères. L'étude confirme enfin la nécessaire prise en compte de la poétique d'un écrivain avant toute tentative de traduction et montre comment l’analyse de la traduction peut constituer un moyen d’accès au texte littéraire
