- This doctoral dissertation is based on a sociological analysis of the use of the walkman inurban public spaces. The walkman is considered an analytic tool to identify the evolution of the sensory context of urban space within a framework that includes theories of social interaction and urban sociology. The main hypothesis considers that both interactions in public and the relationship between the city and the dweller are mediatized by sensory instrumentation. Thus, the development of listening with headphones represents a significant change in such mediatization. In this sense, the ordinary context of managing copresence in public space and the interpersonal exchange is substantially transformed. This hypothesis stems from a study performed in the united states which involves two different components. The first component is a corpus of different articles from american periodicals which relate to the prevalent use of walkman. The second component includes a series of semi-directive interviews with users in different public places. The walkman is not merely viewed as an object which prevents communication. Its various uses question the sensory construction of the recirocity of perspectives, the link between spatial behavior and perception and the oscillation between public and private space.
