note
| - Crystallization control is one of the most important techniques of preparation, purification and application of solid substances, making it an intensely studied field. The experimental approach in this study concerns a successful synthesis of epitaxial calcite without the use of any template. The deposit formed on mono- and polycrystalline copper, Ag and Au surfaces were analyzed by ex situ by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) coupled with EDS, Electron Backscattering Diffraction (EBSD), X- Rays Diffraction (XRD), and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and by in situ by micro-Raman spectroscopy. Undersaturated solution contained only calcium at 3 mM concentration and hydrogenocarbonate anion is used. Electrochemically induced dissolved oxygen reduction on the metal film is used to increase the pH of the solution in the vicinity of the metallic surface, leading to calcium carbonate formation. The calcite crystals so obtained were uniform and present a (001) basal plane parallel to the Au or Ag (111) surface. In order to verify the selectivity of those surfaces, calcium carbonate was also crystallized on polycrystalline copper and copper (111) adlayers electrodeposited on gold (111) film, using the same crystallization procedure. The epitaxial calcite appears only on Au or Ag substrate when various rhomboedric shapes can be evidenced on the copper modified surface and non oriented calcite with vaterite on polycrystalline substrate. From these results, an epitaxial relationship is suggested where in the electrode plane the {010} direction of calcite is parallel to the {11-2} direction of gold giving a mismatch below 0.5%. Besides, the effect of sulphate, magnesium and phosphate ions was studied toward the nucleation-growth and orientation of calcite. At the end, two molecules (MEDPHOS and Isonicotinic Acid) were tested for their inhibition power of calcite crystallization
