| - The object of the present thesis is a theological examination of Basil of Caesarea’s concept of Man. The corpus under study is made up of written works dating from his years as Bishop (370-379) and addressed to a wide audience. It includes the homilies On the Origins of Man and Homilies on the Psalms. A thematic and synthetic approach divided into four sections encompasses the whole of human history. It starts with ignorance of and finishes with knowledge of self, treating the question of origins and bringing out the originality of the potential “likeness” deposited in the human being and that Christian life brings to fruition. It is through knowledge of his origins and destiny that man can go forward in earthly life. The future depends on his freedom of choice and true involvement. The Holy Spirit seconds man, taking him to his bosom and elevating him to the dignity of adoptive beloved son of God. What emerges from Basil’s works is thus a dynamic image of man-in-progress, responsible and co-creator of his being, the image of a being open to transcendence and confident in divine action. Man finds accomplishment in this humano-divine synergy, yet remains a being-in-progress. Basil of Caesarea puts forward a conception of Man tied to spirituality. His is a spiritual or pneumatic anthropology, anthropology being taken in the sense of reflection on man in his constitutive relationship with God; spiritual life is thus nothing else but life in the Holy Spirit.
- L’étude théologique de la conception de l’homme d’après Basile de Césarée est l’objectif principal du présent travail. Le corpus étudié est constitué par les écrits qui datent de la période épiscopale (370-379) et s’adressent au grand public. Il inclut en particulier les homélies Sur l’origine de l’homme et les Homélies sur les Psaumes. Une approche thématique et synthétique, partagée en quatre parties, englobe l’ensemble de l’histoire de l’homme. Allant de l'ignorance à la connaissance de soi, elle se préoccupe des origines et relève l’originalité de la « ressemblance » qui est déposée en puissance dans l’être humain et qui est à réaliser par la vie chrétienne. C’est en connaissant son origine et sa destinée que l’homme peut avancer sur le chemin de la vie terrestre. L’avenir dépend de son choix libre et de son engagement effectif. Le Saint-Esprit seconde l’homme, le prend en son sein et l’élève à la dignité de fils adoptif et de bien-aimé de Dieu. C’est ainsi une image dynamique de l’homme en devenir, responsable et co-créateur de son être qui se dégage des écrits basiliens. C’est l’image d’un être ouvert à la transcendance et confiant dans l’action divine. Dans cette synergie humano-divine, l’homme trouve son accomplissement mais il reste toujours un être en devenir. Basile de Césarée présente donc une conception de l’homme liée à la spiritualité. Il existe, chez lui, une anthropologie spirituelle ou pneumatique, l’anthropologie étant entendue comme réflexion sur l’homme dans sa relation constituante avec Dieu, et la vie spirituelle n’est rien d’autre que la vie dans le Saint-Esprit.
