This article focuses on expressive sentential phrases in French contemporary novels, such as c’est un comble ‘that is the last straw’ or c’est dommage ‘it’s a pity’. The corpus study shows that these expressions, while largely predominant in the dialogue sequences, are not completely absent from the narrative parts, where they play a specific role.
