LUTHER AU MIROIR DE SA CORRESPONDANCE. ETUDE HISTORIQUE, LITTERAIRE ET THEOLOGIQUE

CE TRAVAIL CONSTITUE LA PREMIERE ETUDE GLOBALE DE LA CORRESPONDANCE DE MARTIN LUTHER (1483-1546). IL EXAMINE LA QUASI-TOTALITE DE SES 2650 LETTRES, D'UNE MANIERE HISTORIQUE, LITTERAIRE ET THEOLOGIQUE : APRES UNE PRESENTATION D'ENSEMBLE (CIRCONSTANCES DE REDACTION ET D'ACHEMINEMENT ; EMPLOI DU LATIN OU DE L'ALLEMAND ; CODAGE), SIX CHAPITRES SE CONSACRENT A SES PRINCIPAUX GENRES LITTERAIRES : INFORMATIONS ; SUPPLIQUES ET RECOMMANDATIONS ; CONSEILS ; POLEMIQUE ; APOLOGIE ; RECONFORT (TROST). A L'INTERIEUR DE CHAQUE GENRE, DECOUPAGES THEMATIQUES PUIS CHRONOLOGIQUES METTENT EN EVIDENCE LA VARIETE DES MISSIVES DE LUTHER, DE MEME QUE, POUR LES LETTRES A VISEE PERSUASIVE, LES RUPTURES ET LES CONTINUITES DE SON ARGUMENTATION THEOLOGIQUE : LE MILLIER DE LETTRES INFORMATIVES FAIT APPARAITRE QUE, POUR LUTHER, TOUT EVENEMENT PARTICIPE D'UN COMBAT ENTRE DIEU ET LE DIABLE ; LE RESTE DE LA CORRESPONDANCE MODULE CE MOTIF AU GRE DES VISEES DE L'EPISTOLIER, EN FONCTION DU GENRE LITTERAIRE ET DES DESTINATAIRES. PLUSIEURS ANALYSES DETAILLEES COMPLETENT NOTRE ETUDE GENERIQUE ET THEMATIQUE. DE NOMBREUSES COMPARAIONS AVEC LA TRADITION EPISTOLAIRE (TRAITES ET CORRESPONDANCES) ANTERIEURE OU CONTEMPORAINE A LUTHER REHAUSSENT LES SPECIFICITES DE SES LETTRES ET LEUR APPORT AUX MUTATIONS DU STYLE EPISTOLAIRE ; DES PARALLELES AVEC LES AUTRES ECRITS DU REFORMATEUR SITUENT SA CORRESPONDANCE PAR RAPPORT A L'ENSEMBLE DE SON OEUVRE. THIS WORK IS THE FIRST OVERALL STUDY OF MARTIN LUTHER'S CORRESPONDENCE (1483-1546) ALMOST ALL HIS 2650 LETTERS ARE EXAMINED IN THE LIGHT OF HISTORICAL, THEOLOGICAL AND LITERARY APPROACHES. AFTER AN OVERVIEW (CIRCUMSTANCES OF COMPOSITION AND DISTRIBUTION ; LATIN OR GERMAN LANGUAGE ; ENCODING), SIX CHAPTERS INVESTIGATE THE LITERARY GENRES OF THE CORRESPONDENCE : INFORMATION, PETITIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS, ADVICE, CONTROVERSY, APOLOGY, COMFORT (TROST). WITHIN EACH GENRE, TOPICAL AND CHRONOLOGICAL DIVISIONS UNDERSCORE THE WIDE RANGE OF LUTHER'S MISSIVES. FOR HIS DEMONSTRATIVE LETTERS SEQUENCES AND BREAKS WITHIN THE THEOLOGICAL ARGUMENTATION ARE UNDERLINED AS WELL. THE THOUSAND INFORMATIVE LETTERS EMPHASIZE THAT FOR LUTHER EVERY EVENT IS PART OF A STRUGGLE BETWEEN GOD AND EVIL. THE REST OF THE CORRESPONDENCE MODULATES THIS PATTERN ACCORDING TO LUTHER'S AIMS, LITERARY GENRE AND ADDRESSEES. A FEW DETAILED ANALYSES COMPLETE OUR GENERIC AND TOPICAL STUDY. MANY COMPARISONS WITH THE EPISTOLARY TRADITION (TREATISES AND CORRESPONDENCE) ENHANCE THE SPECIAL FEATURES OF HIS LETTERS AS WELL AS THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO THE TRANSFORMATIONS OF THE EPISTOLARY STYLE. THE PARALLELISM DRAWN WITH THE OTHER WRITINGS OF THE REFORMER MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO PLACE THE CORRESPONDENCE WITHIN LUTHER'S COMPLETE WORKS.
