L\u2019\u00E9tude de stabilit\u00E9 de deux tourbillons co-rotatifs de Batchelor,r\u00E9alis\u00E9e avec un code \u00E0 \u00E9l\u00E9ments spectraux, a permis d\u2019identifier clairement des modes de l\u2019instabilit\u00E9elliptique \u00E0 structure spatiale complexe, pour diff\u00E9rentes valeurs de l\u2019\u00E9coulement axial et du nombre d\u2019onde axial. Exp\u00E9rimentalement, l\u2019instabilit\u00E9 elliptique a \u00E9t\u00E9 mise en \u00E9vidence dans des paires de tourbillons co- et contra-rotatifs, g\u00E9n\u00E9r\u00E9es au moyen de deux demi-ailes plac\u00E9es dans un canal hydrodynamique.L\u2019analyse POD (Proper Orthogonal Decomposition) d\u2019images acquisespar une cam\u00E9ra rapide a men\u00E9 \u00E0 une caract\u00E9risation pr\u00E9cise du mode de l\u2019instabilit\u00E9 observ\u00E9, qui implique des perturbations avec des nombres azimutaux m=0 et m=2, remplissant la condition de r\u00E9sonance de l\u2019instabilit\u00E9 elliptique. L\u2019analyse num\u00E9rique de stabilit\u00E9 des vortex exp\u00E9rimentaux, caract\u00E9ris\u00E9s par une m\u00E9thode de V\u00E9locim\u00E9trie St\u00E9r\u00E9oscopique par Images de Particules), a montr\u00E9 le m\u00EAme mode instable. Les longueurs d\u2019onde et taux de croissance exp\u00E9rimentaux et num\u00E9riques sont en bon accord. La deuxi\u00E8me partie de l\u2019\u00E9tude porte sur le \u201Cvortex meandering\u201D, abord\u00E9 exp\u00E9rimentalement en g\u00E9n\u00E9rant un vortex de bout d\u2019aile. Une analyse d\u00E9taill\u00E9e des perturbations du tourbillon permet de mettre ce ph\u00E9nom\u00E8ne en relation avec la th\u00E9orie de croissance transitoire des perturbations d\u2019un vortex isol\u00E9." .

The first part of the thesis focuses on the elliptic instability in co- and counter-rotating vortex pairs with axial core flow. The stability analysis of two Batchelor vortices clearly identifies elliptic instability modes with complex spatial structures, for a range of axial flows and axial wave numbers. Experimentally, the elliptic instability was evidenced in co- and counter-rotating vortices, generated by two half wings in a water channel. High-speed video recordings and Proper Orthogonal Decomposition of dye visualisations allowed a precise characterisation of the instability mode, which involves perturbations of azimuthal wave numbers m=0 and m=2, fulfilling the elliptic instability resonance condition. The numerical stability analysis of the experimental vortices revealed the same unstable mode. Experimental and numerical wavelengths and growth rates are in good agreement. The second part of the thesis deals with \u201Cvortex meandering\u201D, studied experimentally by generating a single wing-tip vortex. A detailed analysis of the vortex perturbations successfully links this phenomenon to the transient growth theory, predicting that the most energetic (optimal) perturbation of a Gaussian vortex at a finite time should take the form of a displacement mode. The theoretical axial wavelength of the perturbation is of the same order as the typical length of the vortex displacement oscillation measured experimentally." .
