Space in literature is transformed by the author’s personal sensibility and willingness to do so: it is an idealized space, a transfer to the imaginary level. This research explores the dimension of space in literary works, starting from the relation between “literary” and “geographical” space. It is a comparative study of the literary representation of three Mediterranean towns: Naples (Italy), Alexandria (Egypt) and Tangier (Morocco). The methodology is based on two main texts: Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino and Structure of Poetic Language by Jean Cohen. The literary corpus includes novels, published in the second half of the twentieth century. The authors are either natives or deeply involved in the urban space which they refer to. New fantastic cities – such as Naptangale – synthesize study results by artistic means. Cartography (Volume II) and Photo-Dossier (Volume III) allow one to place literary images and to compare them with other representations of the same urban space. They also highlight the fact that in the interpretation and “reproduction” of the world, both geography and literature, as well as photography, can support one another.
