Anti-nuclear movements have been thoroughly investigated by sociologists and commented upon in the media. However, the objections from the non-nuclear countries which happen to be close to nuclear sites have been mostly ignored. The study of the Irish reactions to the nuclear complex of Sellafield, on the other side of the Irish Sea, illustrates the various forms of anti-nuclear mobilizations, against the backdrop of the ongoing tensions between Britain and the Republic of Ireland. In Ireland, the risks posed by the Sellafield facilities have mobilized public opinion and the authorities from the end of the eighties, in a broad consensus which has induced the Irish government to demand some control over the decisions relating to the activities at the nuclear site. However, the attempt to bring out the ideological coherence of Irish antinuclearism from the late sixties to 2003 also sets into relief a number of contradictions and flaws which make it necessary to consider the issue from the point of view of national identity. Even if the conflict over Sellafield is somehow connected with the age-old fight against British imperialism, can it be reduced to a mere revival of the nationalist sentiment, in a new form derived from the growing environmental awareness in industrialized societies? We propose to consider antinuclearism in Ireland as a conveyor of identity for the young republic. To serve this purpose, we will study Anglo-Irish diplomatic relations as well as the place of Ireland in Europe and in the world.
