This thesis in contemporary history is about the bagne (labour camp) established in Rochefort's port from 1766 to 1852. Its approach is based on the analysis of the bagne organisation through the Commissaire de Marine's - the man in charge of the convicts - letters. His intermediary position, between the politics of the labour camp and the reality of the field, makes him indeed the key-stone of this organisation. The period studied is due to the availability of the resources. This thesis adopts mixed methods: a quantitative approach relying on a databank that I have established about the convicts completing a more qualitative perspective on the textual sources. Cette thèse d'histoire contemporaine est consacrée au bagne portuaire de Rochefort en activité de 1766 à 1852. Son approche consiste en l'analyse du fonctionnement du bagne étudié par le prisme de la correspondance du commissaire de marine chargé de diriger le service des chiourmes. Sa position intermédiaire le place en effet entre les politiques du bagne et les réalités du terrain, soit entre le marteau et l'enclume. La disponibilité des sources justifie le découpage périodique de 1812 à 1852. Cette thèse adopte une méthodologie mixte : une approche quantitative à partir d'une base de données des condamnés complétant une perspective plus qualitative sur la source initiale.
